SPATIAL INFERENCE AND CONSTRAINT SOLVING How to Depict Textual Spatial Descriptions from Internet

چکیده
Today there are still many applications in the Internet, where the user is given a textual description of a spatial configuration (e.g. chat, e-mail or newsgroups). The user is asked to imagine the scene and to draw inferences. We present a new approach to generate depictions of such scenes. Besides of drawing spatial inferences, this leads to the problem of solving a system of complicated numerical constraints. In contrast to qualitative spatial reasoning, we use a metric description where relations between pairs of objects are represented by parameterized homogenous transformation matrices with numerical (nonlinear) constraints. We employ methods of machine learning in combination with a new algorithm for generating depictions from text including spatial inference.

A Method of Spatial Reasoning Based on Qualitative Trigonometry
Due to the lack of exact quantitative information or the difficulty associated with obtaining or processing such information, qualitative spatial knowledge representation and reasoning often become an essential means for solving spatial constraint problems as found in science and engineering. This paper presents a computational approach to representing and reasoning about spatial constraints in...
متن کاملSpatial Inference - Learning vs. Constraint Solving
We present a comparison of two new approaches for solving constraints occurring in spatial inference. In contrast to qualitative spatial reasoning we use a metric description, where relations between pairs of objects are represented by parameterized homogenous transformation matrices with numerical (nonlinear) constraints. We employ interval arithmetics based constraint solving and methods of m...
متن کاملSpatial Inference with Constraints
We present an approach for solving constraint nets occurring in spatial inference using methods of Machine Learning. In contrast to qualitative spatial reasoning we use a metric description. Relations between pairs of objects are represented by parameterised homogeneous transformation matrices and numerical (nonlinear) constraints on the parameters. For drawing inferences we have to multiply th...
متن کاملIntegrating Constraint Satisfaction and Spatial Reasoning
Many problems in AI, including planning, logical reasoning and probabilistic inference, have been shown to reduce to (weighted) constraint satisfaction. While there are a number of approaches for solving such problems, the recent gains in efficiency of the satisfiability approach have made SAT solvers a popular choice. Modern propositional SAT solvers are efficient for a wide variety of problem...
متن کاملWhere Was Alexander the Great in 325 BC? Toward Understanding History Text with a World Model
We present a toy world model for interpreting textual descriptions of the movement record of a historical figure such as Genghis Khan or Napoleon. We cast the problem of document understanding as the task of finding episodes that do not violate the soft constraint conditions derived from the document. The model thus allows us to infer his or her locations by finding multiple solutions of an opt...
